The empty chairs

Three chairs sit empty on Christmas Day
In decades past my nearest family
Sat their in the front room
Munching on spouts and pulling crackers
They to vanished one by one
And Christmas got a little smaller
No more Bing on the stereo for Nan
No more singing in welsh for grandad
Then no more mum helping dad in the kitchen
The carols still played from kings
But Christmas was changed
In character
Christmas is now a time for memory
If I could have one Christmas miracle
I d wish those chairs no longer sat idol
The spirit of this season
Is more haunted than the hallows Eve
Though friendly spirits linger here
Their laugher carries though the years
Into the hearts of little dears
Whom for Christmas time is new
They do not see the empty chairs
nor did I , they are unseen by youth
For Christmas is eternal
And we are not
And so is ever bitter sweet
Up and down the nation
From household to household
It’s babies first Christmas dressed as an elf
It’s double time and FaceTime for those in work
It may be Nans last Christmas but she put way the sherry
Each Christmas in every home the greatest joy is seeing those chairs filled
As we move up the ages
And Christmas changes
And still stays the same

You have captured some of the poignant moments of these few days - probably not so much the past couple of years for some, but there in mind nevertheless. I hope you have a good Christmas, and a very happy new year

Identify with this poem whole heartedly. Loved ones we have shared Christmas with now gone does leave an empty space. But like you say, we have our memories to treasure.
