Like Mamma Used to Make

She was an expert
at using the whisk
yet marrying her
carried some risk.

He knew she could
bake good cakes
but not like the ones
his mamma used to make. 

He had to admit that
he could not shake
his lifetime liking
for his mum's burnt cakes.

I have to be thankful for the standard of my dear old ma's cooking because it was she who inspired me to learn to cook myself. I would have died of starvation if I hadn't.

Her burn't rice pudding was nice though.

I didn't learn to cook for myself until I left home; prior to that I relied entirely on my mother's skills as a cook and was never disappointed, no burnt cakes or other dishes. Perhaps, indirectly, she taught me the culinary arts because I remember how she went about organising and preparing meals. The way she cooked risotto or ragu. I particularly recall how she made my favourite zabaglione at breakfast time.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity of sharing a few memories, Turlough.

Reminds me of my mother's Yorkshire puddingss - they were dense, solid and doughy. I loved them. Can't describe how disappointed I was to order beef with Yorkshire pudding in a restaurant and get these light flufy things.

I can identify with this, Kristi. When one is used to certain tastes it is difficult to accept alternatives. I once had to cook a meal for my daughters during my wife's absence and my effort at frying chips was ridiculed as they were described by the girls as 'soggy chips' .(They liked their chips crisp and dry whereas I had put an excessive amount of oil in the pan).The verdict was that they were the best chips they ever tasted.!
