Fingers sense
touch detail,
caress;
delicately manipulate
surgeon’s scalpel,
artists’ brush,
musical melodies fast and intricate.
Nerve networks
back and fore from brain HQ
coordinate
multiple muscles
and tendons
to work the digit widgets –
each thumb (opposable)
“lends a hand” –
not opposing!
supporting, aiding
the other four
to do so much more
than an animal’s paw:
efficiently
curling, picking,
selecting, separating
– engineering marvel,
magnificent, exquisite design:
no gradual emergence
with aeons to refine,
exquisite tools capable:
each of us responsible
to handle and use with care!

Hi Rhiannon,
I think you've summed up the miracle of hands perfectly in this poem, can't imagine life without them.

Hi Rhiannon
Hi Rhiannon
I really liked this praise of our hands. I am very lucky that mne still work well, at playing the organ and typing, although my hand writing is pretty awful. I attribute part of my luck to the fact that I have taken cod liver oil tablets for the last 35 years or so (recommended by my husband's aunt). At 40 I started having painful hands, and went to the doctor who just basically said, hand luck. That's arthritis for you, learn to live with it. I noticed how skillful my soon to e surgeon's hands are.

Hi Rhiannon,
Hi Rhiannon,
Hands - what can one say about hands? I just know that the artists who paint without hands are pretty fantastic, doing marvellous artwork with their mouths or feet. The majority of us though just could not do that !!!

Something I remember my english granny
Something I remember my english granny exclaiming sometimes.
It was when there was a new invention something clever like a TV or whatever vacuum cleaner whatnot and they were pleased about it almost proud. Whatever newfangled gadget or clever tool. Can opener say, or sowing machine. What will they think of next!!
Those days there were many inventions every day some new gadget thing. Kind of a of wonderment. No end to their ideas! Sorry I thought it was some standard idiom I thought it was common. I'm not quite sure of the wording either. Thanks for asking.
As for hands, yes the best tools an engineering masterpiece as you say, the ultimate. Sometimes these days we forget to use and to practice our hands, even just forget of about them altogether.
Have a good weekend! Tom
