From new-born breath ’til still of death:
Hearing sounds and conversation,
gazing round in exploration,
head and eyes, then body moves
– experiencing new treasure troves;
discovery that mouth contortions
form improving imitations
of speech attracting their attention,
honed to full communication
… reading, writing, composition,
travelling, experimentation,
helping others – satisfaction,
teaching, urging and correction;
beauty to research, discover:
life-long, look and think and wonder.

During the week I've had some thoughts about all those ships called 'Discovery' down the ages, and the space shuttle, and thoughts about our universe being investigatable, ie its laws not fickle etc.

They didn't mature, but yesterday it came to mind of a child's age of discovery, and then how life-long it is, and should be, and that came to life! Rhiannon

You describe really well just how much there is to learn about ourselves and the world we live in, from birth to death there's always something new to discover. Our home the earth always leaves me full of wonder and wanting to learn more.

We are like sponges, constantly soaking it all in. It always amazes me how much very young children learn in their first years but as you've said here, we never stop developing and learning from experience of the world around us and others.

Thank you, Jane. Having two grandchildren living in our annexe for the last two years (one now being 5 and one almost 3) has been fascinating! And yes, so much to explore and learn, and even in our own capabilities and how to help others! Rhiannon

Hi Rhiannon

Lovely poem which brings back memories of tiny babies and they turn into older children. I used to make a cherio mouth when holding my newborn grandbabies - so I was actually mimicking them.

Thank you , Jean. Interaction begins very early! and how they absorb so much of what they hear and see, record and correlate. Our youngest grandchild has been talking sentences or paragraphs that are very difficult to understand but when you get a clue in you realise she is saying such complex things, but is reluctant to stop and improve single words. But it is getting better, and she realises now it is not our fault if we don't understand! eg 'Bop' = shop. say 'Sh-sh-sh'  'Sh-sh-sh'   'sh-sh-op'   'Sh-sh-bop!'
