Mother

has arrived-
her feathers pressing
warmly in the nest
opens her mouthful
of dew worms
& baby sparrows
lean forward
to a thrusting chin.
Babies place tiny beaks
inside for sustenance
food shared
and welcomed-
mother endures family
hunger and love.
She is their
precious hero.

Your poem reminded me of the Jenny Wren we had nesting in the beam of our lean to. It's wonderful to behold the parents flying backwards and forwards with tasty morsals, or bits of lining for the nest when we sat very quietly watching.
The mother certainly is the baby birds precious hero.
