Persephone's first day
By Di_Hard
- 2306 reads
I came from darkness into darkness
from walls of Earth, veined halls
seeping mesh of fresh water down, along, down
sought and silent-supped by mouthless roots
spreading life's gripping secret, choice
behind me is close fellowship of worms, who know only feel
and burn at my touch, both fearing more heat's deep
molten sleepless iron core
wrought by those above to deadly blades
of spade and sword, shared red in our split-spilt blood
from cold light of inlit quartz and diamonds' birthing
into moon's sight, and dream-far stars'
possibilities going on and on
and air - so much room to breathe in this place! Space
to run under sky's roof
around's become underfoot. I stop, touch ground's stillness
push pale fingers in its old old hold, and from the hole
Spring
slim shoots, and bells swell in a peal, shining
white as Night's gifts, small; snowdrops
make me want to grow again! Recall Hades' purple cloak
of silk so fine it would slip into my mind like wine
fill me, sate me of longing for what? I forgot
and now I summon memories of sumptuous imprisonment
to petals' colour, intense as a god's passion, and closed
as I, till
like an opening eye, at the world's edge, YELLOW!
and the first crocus unfurls to show our heart
bright as the sun

"... from cold light of inlit
"... from cold light of inlit quartz and diamonds' birthing.."
So many beautiful phrases in here. There's an operatic feel to this poem, Di. The final act crocuses unfurling. Spectacular.

Beautifully led from
Beautifully led from beginning to end - from darkness to bright as the sun. Loads of thought provoking descriptions. This one stood out for me - life's gripping secret, choice.

so much of your imaginative,
so much of your imaginative, creative spirit has gone into this poem Di. You bring the story of Persephone's journey into the light from darkness to life with beautiful expression of phraseology.
A masterpiece indeed.

I've never been one for
I've never been one for mythology, but I think I have grasped the metaphor of emerging from the dark of Hades via the dark of earth and out into so much room to breathe in this place! and the delight and wonder of the unfurling crocus – so beautiful when the sun comes out! Rhiannon

This is really beautiful, Di,
This is really beautiful, Di, a wonderful song to the coming of spring. The Persephone myth was always one of my favourites too. And your poem captures a lot of how I feel now the days are drawing out and we're emerging from the winter darkness. Time for a bit of cautious unfurling.
Thanks for this one!

Movement, so beautifully done
Movement, so beautifully done in your words, taking us from the depth, the soil, the darkness to light, from the seed to the bloom; the emergence of spring. A lovely poem and one I will enjoy reading again.
