It’s a long sucking nose
working like a hose,
and a snorkel for swimming
quite far underwater,
(– the lungs can bear
the lower-pressure air
– they’re protected and bounded
– not by cavity surrounded)
40,000 muscles in a powerful limb
that can branches rip,
pick a single pin,*
with its mobile tip,
yet can dig for moisture,
without skin’s rupture.
Compliant, and controllable,
and eminently flexible,
an appendage that is lifted
to smell
and stroked on the ground
to ‘feel’
movement’s ‘sound’.
A trunk that can trumpet
a sound of nobility,
illustrates amazing
skills and ability.
* I can’t find out if this fact applies to the Asian
as well as the African elephant as the former only
has on ‘finger’ on its trunk tip.
[IP: facial features eg. eyes, ears, nose, mouth …]

What a great opening. It's a dynamic poem that brings the elephant to life. Nicely done, Rhiannon. Paul

40,000 muscles! I didn't know
40,000 muscles! I didn't know trunks are used as snorkels, either, and liked very much the contrast of "stroked on the ground to ‘feel’ movement’s ‘sound’" with "trumpet a sound of nobility"
