Mud fondue!

A wet July
is better than dry,
or temperatures high
– it can bring a supply
of liquid mud
– so good
for a splash
and a slither

– soon
chocolatey face
and chocolatey feet,
chocolate, chocolate everywhere
but not a drop to eat!

The only liquid mud that we have here is the melted chocolate. I've never known a hotter summer than this but at least it reduces my appetite, especially for chocolate.

I enjoy the hot sunny weather but I think I would probably benefit from,,,

Yes, we wonder how you are all coping. Here it is very showery, and altogether we have had a lot of rain, hence the picture which was taken yesterday, but not ny me. June was hot, but not European heat. Rhiannon

Life slows down a bit in the summer, not that life in Bulgaria could be described as fast and furious in the first place.

I enjoy the hot weather. It's one of the reasons I moved away from England but I think I would really struggle if I had to go to work each day in these conditions. We always have hot summers but it seems more intense this year. It must be four weeks since we last had a day when the afternoon temperature didn't exceed 32 degrees. Sometimes it's nearer to forty.

Better this than the minus twenty degrees that we sometimes get a few days of in the winter. And, with either extreme, people seem to get used to it.

In November I'll be in Manchester for a week. Perhaps you could send me some survival tips before I travel.

! I remember in GCE geography (not GCSE in those days) learning of the more extreme weather climate in central Europe. Rhiannon

Hi Rhiannon,

love this poem, it sums up the weather completely, which I have to admit to loving as I get older. Where would we be without the rain? Especially with all the heat and fires going on in other parts. Yes your poem was certainly my cup of tea. yes Thank you for sharing.

Thanks, Jenny. Yes, there's a lot to be said for a mild climate even if we do get less of the sunshine and more rain than we would like sometimes! Children certainly enjoy messing about in mud - as long as they have wellies and cover-alls, and a shower at home! Rhiannon

If only we could have just a little bit of Turlough's heat and sunshine, it would be so much nicer. I'm finding this summer quite depressing (though my garden isn't)

A very good (if a little muddy) response to the IP. You haven't marked it as such but I'm assuming from the fondue reference.

It's supposed to be warmer next week - fingers crossed!

Thank you. I realised the children wouldn't normally have had that mud-pleasure this time of the year! It has been a bit dark and chilly (and wet!) this month, but the extreme heat does cause problems, - we appreciate a mixture and moderation!

I hadn't thought of this as IP. I had done one on IP. The 'fondue' reference just seemed a good metaphor for the 'melted chocolate' look of the play mud! Rhiannon

When my youngest son was little, during a heatwave, I dug a very big hole in the garden and filled it with the hose. he still says The Mud Pit was the best thing ever - I had to hose him down before I let him back into the house though!

Good for you! That's a lovely story! You'll have noticed that these two had plastic cover-alls but there was another photo of a face decorated with mud, like face-paints! Rhiannon
