In the middle of tonight!

“Where has that hour gone?
or is it that new time has come along
somehow
from somewhere else?
And have the sun and moon jumped back
along their track?
or paused awhile along their steady course?

Oh, no! it’s sprung ahead to Spring! –
or did it just fly in from earlier this year
to here and now instead?!”

At the autumnal changing of the clocks I always seem to spend my extra hour manually adjusting our clocks. The one on the upstairs landing alone requires around fifteen minutes. 

Your poem does raise some questions. I wonder happens to that hour? And why do they need to do it as, by the middle of December, it'll be dark for most of the day anyway?

Do you change them tonight also? The benefit must vary from place to place and occupation, I suppose. But my poem was just a bit of fun twirling in my mind  in the middle of the night! Being still fairly childish?! (I suppose, philosophically it is exchanged between spring and autumn in a sense! ) Rh

I'm fairly sure that the whole of Europe makes the adjustment tonight Rhiannon.

I recognised the fun and humour in your poem. I was thinking the same way. I don't really spend an hour changing clocks but it seems like it. And I don't even attempt to change the one in the car.

It's a shame we can't all just use sundials.

My mother used to wait to ask my husband to change her digital watch, but sometimes it was so near the next change by the time she saw him she didn't bother, I think! Rh

Hi Rhiannnon, for me time is irrelevant now I'm retired, but I too wonder what happens to the movements of the sun and beautiful bright moon I saw last night...hope it was as bright where you are.

! Thanks, Jenny. Of course it is our naming of the hours that changes not the sun's movements, but I was imagining trying to explain to a child, and getting into knots! Rhiannon

I once forgot to change my car clock for so long, it didn't seem to matter anymore, so I just waited for the time to change back again. Both changes - forward and back, always leave me feeling slightly 'wrong' for a while. I think I'd really prefer to stick to one or another! Thank you for your funny poem Rhiannon - a very good question indeed - where does the hour go!

I've realised now the other side of the question is 'what do we do with that extra hour?'! though in the poem just making a tease and joke of it as in a child's perspective and perplixity! Rhiannon

What a mystery Rhiannon, yes where is that hour now? Must have missed that class. That's the whole idea … tricky question I like it! Could make up a nice riddle too.

Is an hour lost now added again next Spring? Borrowed by next Spring? I think yes, borrow and lend it must be. And have you heard of the fencepost error? Your mathematician husband could help with that one.

These days I need a calculator to work out my age +- an odd day or year or so. Still confusing. Too few fingers and toes. It is not the complicated thing that confuses simple man, it is the simple thing that confuses complicated man.

It  is quite easy to talk in a way that makes people more confused than explain things too. Like the pseudo-science of science fiction! Rhiannon
