Fenrir

What a strange accident it is
to be alive, the oldest poem;
meat and bone. There, water -
a mirror, a wolf's head, grotesque,
snarls, I, Fenrir, am only ever
the monster you make me.
Scratchit, ear and nose to the wind,
fenbeast, hari tremble, snaw snap,
catchit, catchit, limpdead and tear,
dirty snow flowers of red,
the night is iss, sky-breaking.
Here's a trick: take mountainroots,
bird spittle, a cat's footsteps, take sinew
of bear and breath of fish, take
the long beard of a woman,
spin a yarn to tie him down.
We look into winter, úlfr,
winter gazes into us: fimbulvetr,
the oldest promise, war,
and earth swallows itself,
when every bond may be broken,
what will become of us then?
Based on the tale of Fenrir. Old Norse words included: hari - hare, iss - ice, úlfr - wolf, fimbulvetr - an extreme winter foretold to precede Ragnarök.
