Hidden in places no one wants to go

under empty shell cases, between

bullets forgotten or lost at death, 

discarded tank tracks and beneath

hospitals blackened and skeletal or

homes reduced to unstable brick piles.

Faith undaunted, they search for light.

 

On the muddy scree where glaciers

once passed they raise their heads and dig

deep believing they will find sustenance

and grow into giants. In cosy gardens

behind suburban houses their healthy

sprouts feed wildlife with food that once

grew in diversity on monocultured fields.

 

A faith that covered scarred lands a

century ago and burst though debris

in gaps between houses who escaped

yet another blitz. Driving on despite

mindless greed and maniacal power games

they will continue to grow and march

across raped surfaces until all signs of

humanity’s absurdity are masked forever.

So much wisdom in this eye opener of a poem. We humans think we have the upper hand, but when it comes to nature, the natural world will triumph in the end.

Powerful and skilfully written.

I wrote this after seeing news film of trees and bushes in green earyspring colours struggling to grow in the debris of the Ukraine war also the barren wreckage of Gaza compared to the cozy green shots of Jerusalem.

Humanity is so collectively stupid at times

I must admit I could have said a lot more in this, so much scary stuff going on these days.

I was amused at the anthropomorphic little plants determined to do good despite! The greening over and burial of many lost/perished civilizations come to light, after disappearance. Rhiannon

It may be one way to view little green shoots, but that wasn't what I meant (cute idea though)

I guess my point is that it's almost impossible to stop plant life taking over given the chance, they've had a lot more practise than humans laugh

A few years ago I went on a tour holiday to Mexico visiting the ancient structures mainly of the Mayans. We got right down to the rain forest on the border with Gutamala to visit a newly discovered temple hidden amongst truly giant trees and undergrowth. It really brings home the force of plant life. 

Up here in the north it can do the same it just takes a little longer

Made me think of the apocalypic series like "The Last of Us" and "Alice in Borderland". Both have that backdrop of flora reborn post Armageddon.

 

Powerful poem, powerful message. Nature will endure long after we are gone.

I've come back to read this again, and I can add nothing better than what has alreday been posted. And  (for me) it worked so well as life always affirming amidst humanities careless custody of our planet. And congrats Ed, on the cherries and poem of the week.
