On Certainty

On Saturdays we get a Guardian delivered
it's always through our door at 8.55
the regularity makes us feel good
that someone is in a routine their efficiency
brings out the best of us. We know exactly
what time to get the first coffee ready for.
It's me in charge of the kitchen, it's the only
morning I am home.
The news never feels the same when you read it
on your phone. There was a time we stopped
following the news completely but now
we read the news the way that our dads read about
bi-elections in Chesterfield, the ha'penny
being withdrawn from circulation the privatisation
of British Telecom, the premiere of Starlight Express,
100 arrested aftet violent clashes at Creswell Colliery,
the Thames barrier being opened by the Queen
It Is Saturday Morning says the headline in all the
newspapers. We both have favourite coffee cups
and I still get a buzz when they're being used together.

You,ve summed up our own
You,ve summed up our own Saturday mornings: porridge or muesli, country walk, stop at the village shop for the paper, then Radio4 and a good coffee with the newspaper - ours is The Guardian too.
