The Day Christies Went Up

I was standing outside Stewarts supermarket the day Christies was blown up . A large crowd stood opposite the Christie’s , People told wee Annie in the Ok Stores to get out case their was a bomb next door in Christie’s but she wouldn’t move . Eventually Security forces had to carry her out of the shop
just in time as shortly afterwards the bomb exploded lifting the roof and demolishing the shop .
We weren’t allowed to cross the road for some time . When we finally were told we could go over the road we realised that things would never be the same again . There was a fear now that walked the streets and people started to look over their shoulders when they walked .
Shortly afterwards my family and I emigrated to Australia .
I returned a few years later and looked around at the front of the Crumlin Road , Stewards had closed and things felt a lot different ..
A terrible thing had happened to our lives but the people of Ardoyne had a great strength to keep going regardless .
