Al Hallows Eve
By D G Moody
- 284 reads
The church clock strikes the midnight hour,
And the children by now have long gone home;
Their costumes carefully folded and put away,
Halloween passes into that other day.
In the graveyard unquiet spirits now bestir,
As memories long retained in old bones;
This being the time they arise from the earth,
Leaching dead emotions from hearts in stone.
Emerging ephemeral into cold air
As negatives no longer printed in lives,
With no one there to see how they can be
Corporeal when there’s nothing left to shrive.
Just memories of those who were once alive,
Having now passed on while leaving behind
Dreams and portents dissolving in time as
Fading imprints left in still faithful minds.
Meanwhile, the children are now sound asleep,
Parents having tucked them up in bed while
The Saints shall maintain their rest, for as the
Prophet said – let the dead bury the dead.

I wonder how many costumes
I wonder how many costumes are kept and reused these days!
All will rise at the last day! (saints and the unregenerate). But for now we just have that 'faded imprint left in still faithful miinds'.
Actually the term 'unregenerate' reminds me that in saying that last phrase I think Jesus was speaking of those still without the new Life he could give, and their activities. Rhainnon

This flows better than the version posted last year (I've just re-read it) so well done on this revision. Your poem captures the essense of this time of year including its religious connotations and associations.
I enjoyed this.
Hoping you are well, Dougie. Paul
