SAUDADES
We sat side by side, I and he, and spoke of our shared object of desire.
Strange this encounter, this conversation. We shared our knowledge and discussed the similarities and differences in our relationships. Although they took place at different times, places and over different lengths of time we shared the mark of its passing.
We envied and were sad for each other; we laughed at the happiness our 'mistress' had brought. We agreed on the nature of our
joint affliction, Saudades. In English simply longing but in Portuguese it means so much more like a kind of soul-sickness.
At the end of the evening we parted without exchanging names or making any arrangements to meet again.
Both homesick for a place that was not home, Brasil.
