Sitting up in a hospital bed, throbbing with pain, my brain felt a bit numb. Blood contined to trickle from my nose and my throat was so dry it felt like a bit of it scratched away each time I swallowed. I could see my eyelids through blurred eyes...they couldn't close. Not much to do in hospital....not much to do except think.
After dozing as much as I physically could to pass the time (although the pain made it a difficult feat) my instincts, previously ignored, began to kick in. After a sip of water and a few painful crumbs of bread I ventured to the toilet. Head rush phased me for a moment...but i knew the drill. I was also prepared this time to avoid the mirror. But try as I might a glance managed to pass through the corner of my eyes. The bandages and padding were just as hideous as the bruising and selling to me. The fresh blood soaked in the cotton startled my eyes much like an alarm clock might startle an oblivious sleeper to crash down to reality. All that from just a glimpse, I'd have to shut my eyes next time...
