Chapter Three
A knock
William sat in her kitchen with her mop and wonky mug of tea. Even her wonky cat Arthur, couldn't cheer her up. Everything was a mess.
There was a knock on the door. She didn't want to answer it.
"Delivery for Mr Silverkrink?
"It's Silverkrunk. And he's next door.
She opened the door and a postboy was standing there. There was the parcel. Her one, last chance¦.
She grabbed the parcel.
"I'll take it round. It's no trouble. She could take one last parcel round. Maybe, if she didn't mess this up¦
In her excitement, William forgot all about how hideous Mr Silverkrunk was.
William skidded to the ground. Using the mop was a mistake. She had somehow weighted it to one side: something, amyway, had gone wrong, because she was now at the feet of Mr Silverkrunk, having entered in spectacular fashion, through his closed window. Sher looked at his pale yellow socks, inside his polished blue shoes. Then she looked up at his face. It too was a yellowy colour. It looked strange, and twisted up, as if Mr Silverkrunk had inhaled a small dog and was unwilling to let it out.
Suddenly, as he saw the parcel, his look of extreme dismay became a smile. And then he laughed.
"William, he said.
"I'm so, so, sorry, she said.
"You've come at the perfect time. This parcel is, in fact, a present for you.
"For me? Whispered William.
"Oh yes He was now flushed with excitement, wringing his hands.
"But I'm..but I'm¦ I'm late for school.
"School? School?
YOU'VE NEVER BEEN TO SCHOOL IN YOUR LIFE! He said
He unwrapped the parcel. It was a hideous, frightening looking cage, all long wire and teeth. It had four long metal arms that hung from the top of it. It was clearly not some ordinary bird cage.
"A cage. For birds?
She said, optimistically.
"Not for birds, my little one.
"For CHILDREN! Mr Silverkrunk snarled, and he rushed at William, and with one swift arm, he took her by the ankles. He started dragging her towards the cage, while she grabbed at the door.
"Yaargh! she shouted. "Somebody! But everyone was far far away. Her fingers slipped, and clap! Just like that she was shut up.
