YOU
By Chris Whitley
- 1402 reads
I sit in the shadows my distance to find
Gazing into that black mirror of mind
But my thoughts create and distil
And you walk in my landscape still
Time tangles up taut with sorrow
Yesterday, today with tomorrow
Am I still there behind your pale eyes?
Like a ghost that personifies
I still have your letters they smell of you
But too sad to read them through
Ink on paper in purple prose
Simple keys which open doors
Face in my mind
Talks to me through space and time
Moving me from now to there
Reminding me that I still care
I possess you in my memory
And I fix you in my story
But I knew I could never hold you
For a love that binds is not true
In the ether you wait to appear
You’re gentleness holds me near
There is bliss – cream of thought and mind
I remember we climbed into the sky
You lost your balance a little and cried
as vulnerable as a child
I lose the beginning but see the end
I read the time in your eyes
And I knew you would leave
Imagining my room without you
Everything was in my teeth
I was afraid to speak
You stilled the machine in me.
