The Giant Squid
By shades
- 795 reads
Four Welshmen and a collie dog,
Rowed out from a harbour near Gwent,
The morning was cold with a low sea fog,
Off to the lighthouse they went.
They went in search of a giant squid,
That clung to the rocks near the light,
The wind came up, the collie dog hid,
And the men rowed with all their might.
As the men rowed on they sang an old song,
For good luck and a safe return,
The oars dug deep, their strokes were long,
And the collie dog howled in the stern.
The wind blew stronger, bouncing the boat,
As the waves around them grew,
They bailed out water to keep them afloat,
As the lighthouse came into view.
The men stopped rowing, their fear was showing,
As they sat there frozen in fright,
The enormous squid, its green eyes glowing,
Clung to the base of the light.
Ignoring his fear one man grabbed the spear,
And stood with it raised in the bow,
The men rowed on as the light grew near,
They could smell the monster now.
The man let fly, whistling in the sky,
The spear hit the squid in the head,
Its tentacles flapped and it let out a cry,
But the beast was far from being dead.
The giant squid was mad of course,
And it glared at the four man crew,
Then it grabbed the boat with incredible force,
Smashing the vessel in two.
The four men panicked as anyone would
As they swam for the nearest reef,
And the collie dog paddled as fast as he could
To escape from the monster beneath.
That afternoon a fishing boat came,
And rescued the men from the cold,
They repeated their story time and again,
But no one believed what they told.
Perhaps when it’s calm with a low sea fog,
The monster still clings to the shore,
But those four Welshmen and their faithful dog,
Won’t put to sea any more.
