Two Grandfathers generations apart
P K Routray
Edited by P Gaan
(Dr Das has become a grandfather. He has named his grandson as Nirvana Who was born in USA and Dr Das was born in India. This poem is written comparing the age gap)
Between two grand fathers we make comparison
One of Dr Dash and the other of Nirvana, his grandson,
Dr. Dash’s grandpa enjoyed the status sixty five years ago,
Dr. Dash as grandpa is now satisfying his ego.
The following facts are in common,
Hence the same is in my narration.
Mr. (Dr) Dash and so also Mrs. Dash were in jubilation,
When the little baby was born.
Their Joy must have undergone multiplication,
When the child’s gender was known.
A son will keep the family line in continuation,
He will stay with the family and uphold the family’s tradition.
Unlike a girl child who has to leave the family one day she only will belong to her husband’s family come what may.
The grandson will assist the family during difficult situation.
He will carry them on his shoulders to cremation.
How happy the deceased soul will be, when his dead body is on the shoulders of his son and grandson,
With kiths and kins and villagers, the pyre and rituals will have perfection resulting in his soul’s liberation.
Now the child will grow with them and will be a source of inspiration
Life will be devoid of boredom of retirement seeing the child’s innocent simile and spontaneous reaction.
Let us reflect on the situation
Faced by Dr Dash’s grandfather and grandfather of Nirvana.
When Dr Dash was born, his grandfather must have danced in elation,
With him the entire village must have danced with distribution of sweets for celebration.
After Six and twenty one day and so on,
Would have been Rounds of festivities to celebrate each occasion.
He must have dreamt a lot about his grandson,
Must have revealed his many aspirations to Dr Dash for implementation.
He is no more.
Dr Dash tells his grandfather’s story with joy and tear.
Let us take the case of Dr Dash himself as a grand father
And dwell upon his aspirations and plans for grandchild Nirvana’s future.
When the child grows Dr Dash will have time and freedom to impart him with real education,
All his learnings from his university education to professional experience will get condensed in his grandson.
But Dr Dash forgets that after five years he will have to learn lessons from his grandson,
Browsing internet, teleconferencing, Skype-dancing will be taught him by Nirvana;
The age gap of sixty-five is a gap of two generations,
To cope with them will be beyond grand papa’s expectations.
Others are confidential and personal between Dr Dash and Nirvana,
With blessings to nirvana and good luck to Dr Dash I continue my narration.
In this story we see the difference in situation
Between Dr Dash’s birth and that of his grandson.
Dr Dash was born in a remote rural village of Odisha, (India) in rustic environ,
His grandson was born in a posh hospital in USA amidst height of medical attention.
Dr Dash’s umbilical cord was cut by shell under a thatched roof by a village midwife,
His grandson’s cord was cut with a sterilized unite by a well trained nurse without much strife.
Dr Dash was born in a room lighted by kerosene lamp which might have extinguished many times because of the wind.
Nirvana was born in air conditioned climate and uninterrupted electric light of CKL kind.
Nirvana and his mother were under the care of the highest technology and expert doctors’ service,
But his grand papa and his mother were under the care of an illiterate lady with age old rural practice.
We watch the difference with fun and pleasure.
With all our blessings for Nirvana to always smile and prosper.
