"It's quite something when they say you are born with a foot in both worlds," commented Sharon bitterly, picking up her bag.
"Who said that to you?" I asked quietly, it was weird to hear that said again. People have said that to me.
"The family that Hellgate Church sent," she went on, "Apparently they are fighting a war, over estates that haven't been in use for years."
"Really?"
"Yes, apparently she couldn't close her mind quick enough, and they got the lot."
"People can't help thinking..."
"Open minds are easy victims, and they are using tactics from all over. And the Magpies, simply everywhere, save for the other; she has House Martin in the roof. Not to mention the chaffinches...!"
"Sounds very birdy..."
"They er say she talks to them." She paused for a minute, "Do you think she does?"
"Not a clue!" I said firmly looking her in the eye. I find it helpful sometimes. "Which estates?"
"Local ones?" she said, "I think!"
"Really, don't you think it's likely to be Irish ones? Somewhere with romanicism and paganism flourished, with wild woods, sacrificial stones and a lonely castle with stairs up?"
"Disney!" she snorted at me like a horse. I played with the idea of 'talking Ed' for a minute.
"Which local ones? that poor woman hasn't a bean, we've forced her onto benefits, she's got less than a pensioner."
"The two worlds," she said hesitantly. She was nearly in tears. "Do you think they mean rich and poor?
"No, I always understood it to mean, Pagan and ummm, People of Faiths. Pagans have the one rule....Do want you want, is the whole of the law, whilst the others strive to be good to others as well as theirselves."
"Love thy neighbour..." Sharon said reluctantly, "Not easy to do. It's weak as well."
"Luke says that your neighbour is one who shows mercy to you. Remember that and its much easier. Pagans (Satanists) always find kindness weak. Its what they depend on. You have to keep them out! That rule you have to watch out for it everywhere."
"So she hasn't any estates, so how do they play her out of something she hasn't got?" I enquired.
"If she gets played out of the game of life, they get everything," said Sharon making a face, "They mean everything too, they have site up where they are cutting her up and auctioning bits off. The main protagonist reckons he's her brother, and that he has the estate and should have handed it over years ago."
I stared at her, this defeated looking woman sitting opposite me with her wild straight urchin cut hair. Her brown bovine eyes, all done out in her favourite clothes from a certain fashion store. Not expensive enough to be classy, but good enough all the same. How had she become so able to contemplate all of this?
"Don't you think you should get out now?" I asked soberly, "Phyliss and I are out. We've had enough.
Next time I see that poor woman I'm going to talk to her. I'll even tell her."
"You can't." Sharon said, "It'll be you next."
"Sharon," I said suddenly on my feet, "DON'T YOU EVER THREATEN ME!" Why had she got-to-be so horrid?
