i came in from the crisp new cold of the September morning, still bright with summer lights, the winter was winding in slowly. A beautiful Norfolk day, with all the trees in sudden flushes of colour, and some already dissembling.
In the shops, the windows were talking of Autumn, golds, greys, fawns, and soft maroon, Christmas was still weeks away, a season of let's not get there too fast....
Inside Phyliss's shop, she was stretched out over the cutting table, her whole body a part of the scissors, and she was cutting cloth like a machine.
"Get me a cup of coffee," she grumbled half crossly, "You're late!"
"Sorry Boss," I replied smarted, "I was admiring the Autumn collections in the windows, all the same colours as we're doing..."
"Yes." Phyliss said softly, "So we're adding a bit to ours," she pointed to the orange cloth below her fingers, "I thought it would spice up our window."
"What's it going to be?" I said fingering the softness. "Warm. Not my colour!"
"It's a young colour," she said flinging her hair back, "Too bright for either of us."
She pullled out a design sketch, "A simple A line dress, reminscent of Mary Quant."
"Main line look," I warned her. "Already on the high street."
"Not in this colour," she pointed out, "And people like it, ditzy good girl look."
"I used to go to church in mine."
"Just what I mean!"
Kitty made an appearance just as we were ready to start again.
"Hi," she said, "Sorry I'm late, I was..."
"In the park again," I said, she looked dark about the eyes.
Phyliss looked at her quietly, "You can help me cut if you want, Leggings can do the shop work, I like her new sateen leggings. Very classy!"
"Fla & Flod," I threw in as I walked away.
"Main line," laughed Phyliss. "Likeable main line..."
Phyliss swung closed the curtain as soon as I'd gone into the shop, I'd had instructions, tidy up the window, reset up the counter, rotate the shop stock. Be ready for clients. So I set too.

Behind the curtain, Phyliss was taking the peices off the table, and handing them to Kitty, "Can you pin these together for me, matching the markers?"
Kitty nodded, "Yes, I've done that much at college."
"Want a cup of coffeee, before I cut out another one?"
"Yes,"
"Not too tired out?" asked Phyliss concerned, "Only..."
"I look too tired, I had a bad night, weired out again."
"Why?"
"They have a machine they use when they get tired, I call it a Befuddler, I believe they tape themselves talking nastily, and play it when they get tired."
"So they did some of that..."
"Yes, then this morning I woke up and they had a man playing the Dreamscaper machine, narrating the game inside my head. It's the machine they use to kill people off."
"What was the dream like?"
"Horrible war game - down deep tunnel meets enemy soldiers, they shoot one of my sons - and poof he vanishes... I'm left arguing with them - talking about surrendering, because I want them to shoot me so I can find him."
"Where does the tunnel lead?"
"I don't know, I don't like holes in the ground, and to make me more upset its getting narrower and narrower, and I don't want to go any further... So then i hear this narrater... and I wake up. I know it's not quite a dream then."
"My mother used to get that, she had a weird game dream she kept on having. Jumping on those climbing nets to get either up or down from broken buildings. Eventually she heard the narrater too. Now she never dreams that dream."
"Perhaps the narraters always do the same dreams, and when they die, the dream goes away..."
"Wish this one would choke on his words, I'll have to look out for him in my dreams."
"The other one to watch out for," Phyliss said, cutting out another size on the table, "Is the one where they enter your dream and try to do horrible stuff to you by being your friend, if they can."
"Had that one earlier in the week, they wanted to walk with me through a wall."
Kitty bent her head over the work, she was now rough stitching the two peices together, so that the work held for machining.
"Can you walk worlds?" asked Phyliss, "Mum can't do that one. She said that some of the children in the Psychic hell she was in, were made too."
"Experimenters," remarked Kitty, "I don't know, I nearly did once, only some one pulled me back. I think he was in shock. Can Leggings?"
"I don;'t know, I think she'll run away if we ask her..."
"What did you say in your dream?"
"I got nasty, they are only trying to run worlds to get away with what they've done. I offered to make a hole in the wall and stick her head through so she could see it. The wall will go solid in a bit anyway... Dreams do that."
"Nasty!"
.....................................................................................
"Is your Mum part of the psychic world crowd?" asked KItty quietly, "I've never been since the cruelty case."
"Didn't they have to pay compensation?" asked Phyliss crossly, "They ought too!"
"Yes but I was advised not to pick it up, or they'd find me again, perhaps my exhusband's been picking it up, and that's why they've found me."
"They are in the area too?"
"Some of them. Maybe. Not the ex though!"
"Some are never real!"
"You ought to have it all in one go."
"Yes, I agree, I ought to have it all, and then probably I'd have enough to defend myself or live somewhere where I'd far enough from the world."
"Where would you live?"
"Not sure I'd run away." Kitty said with a grin. "I like Norfolk, and I'm not scared of them anymore. Not like I was... before. I'm not involved, I'm single, free, happy, and I can do almost anything..."
"Leggings had better watch out," sang out Phyliss, "She's like that, and in leggings!"
