WHEN THE MOON WAS KING

years ago, the earth, it seems

revolved around the moon
the earth would play the fiddle
while the moon would call the tune
.
the moons had seas with tides
the earth would make them rise and curl
the moon in male bravado
while the earth was just his girl
.
the people living on the moon
would look upon the earth
and sing romantic songs
as they sat huddled by the hearth
..
but things began evolving
and the lunar life expired
they lost the gift of atmosphere
that all up there required
.
then meteors bombarded
leaving craters all around
all vegetation vanished
leaving gray sand on the ground
.
the earth began to flourish
it was nourished by the sun
a relationship dissolving
as a new one had begun
.
the people grew like flowers
and the tables were then turned
the moon became a satellite
a lover, who was spurned
.
so tonight, look out your window
at that sad and humble moon
and recall it's days of glory
when it dared to call the tune
