ALPHA BETTY (IP)

Alpha Betty was a girl
But people said ‘It’s hard to tell
Cos she’s a geek, and not that pretty
Dark, short hair, it’s such a pity.
Even with those big blue eyes
Full of wonder and surprise
Girls like her don’t get the blokes.
Happiness is for other folks’.
‘I’m what I am and I don’t care.
Joke about me if you dare!
Karma decides your destiny
Live your own life, don’t bother me!’
Many nights she studied late
Never did she hesitate
Or deviate from her life plan-
Phd; then house; kids; man.
Quite quickly she achieved her aim
Round the world her books brought fame;
Some years passed then she decided
That now she wanted what she’d derided;
Until finding love at forty-eight
Very sure it was too late,
Went to womens clinics for the change
X-rays, scans quickly arranged.
Yes! She cried when she had seen
Zac, her son, up on the screen.
The moral of this story’s clear
Up and beyond our 50th year
Us girls can all our dreams achieve
All we need do is Believe!

This is a great poem Linda,
This is a great poem Linda, of the richness of life and how it's for the taking, how all we need to do is go out there and grab it rather than just thinking about our goals. I also thought you put it together well. Glad you shared this one with us. Jenny.

Linda, it was a few minutes
Linda, it was a few minutes before I realised that you were doing this week's IP, as the poem flows in rhythm and story. I was quite amazed how you managed that. The theme was interesting too (not that I would go with karma or just going for my own thing without prayer! but the point of never being too old to make the effort for many new things is good!)
Cherry-worthy hard work. Rhiannon

This poem deserves all its accolades, and more, Linda. As paborama quite rightly says, you manage to fit so much in, within the confines of the prompt. Skilfull work, indeed;-)

Hello Linda,
Hello Linda,
This is great. At the risk of repeating myself you are so good at poetry. I have so much catching up to do. But where is The Sultry. I do so hope you have not abandoned that story.
