As sand that shifts
undulates underfoot
that whips, gashes face
till bloody channels open
for glass hard granules
to sear, seep
into every crevice
of lungs to wind
knock out breath
creep beneath fingernails
to rob claw or grip
stinging eyes, resistant
to weep, wash of tears
pummel heavy till imbedded
as crust upon skull
tightening under thunder
blast of unyielding sun
band of uncontrition
bound round forehead
grit baking brain
pounding each arid second
into ache, into hell...
You drool unchecked into
the cracks of my heart
to grate there forever
lodge unforgiving
beneath my brittle skin
so I squirm
curl, flare
flake, quake
churn, ceaseless burn.
