Raider and Zophos sat under the Origam trees watching twin suns set over the hills of Nepha; the sky turning radiant pink and gold and Zophos plucked upon his electric lute.
"How does it work, Zophos?", asked Raider.
"What?", asked Zophos.
"You know. The magic. Warping space and time with my mind and all that", asked Raider, "How does it work?".
"Oh the magic", said Zophos, scratching his balding head, "Well you've heard of nanotechnology, I presume?".
"Yes tiny machines isn't it", said Raider.
"Well , the ancients of Korridon were masters of nanotechnology; but they went much farther than just making machines from subatomic particles; they made rocks that were computers because every molecule in the rock was a computer part; they made liquids and gasses and even forms of radiation that were machines; they made plants and animals in which every organic cell was fused to a nano-machine; cyborg cells making up hyper-organisms and their proudest achievement of all was the creation of the Warp Warriors for the Warp Warriors had DNA that was part nano-technology and thus could be transmitted like DNA; passed on to their children. Your father and mother must have had a little warp warrior technology in them both that combining together was passed onto you", said Zophos.
"So I'm part machine", asked Raider.
"At the cellular level, yes", said Zophon, "But you are also part human. You see the ancients weren't scientists like the ones who serve Vorgia and her Empire; who think that intelligent beings have the right to do whatever they want without respect to Father Nature and thus make everything dead. Their faith and their science were fused together just the way they fused together the organic and the technological. They believed that the universe was a sentient alien organism and that we are all cells within organs within that organism with a moral function to serve the good of all".
"Then why does evil exist?", aked Raider, "Why does the Dictatrix rule the galaxy?".
"Because everything must have an opposite, because there is order there must be chaos; because there is life there must be death and because there is good there must be evil but it is the function of good to fight against evil just as it is the function of the day to destroy the night", said Zophos, "You, Raider, are the bringer of the dawn. When we go to the imperial palace and you face Vorgia, you will free our people from her tyranny".
Raider picked a starflower and blew the seeds from its head so that they scattered like little dancers on the wind.
"And how are we to get to the Imperial palace of the Dictatrix?", asked Raider, "Do you have an Astrocraft?".
"Oh better than that", said Zophos, "You'll see".
