Superstitions’ Grip

Irrational notions blind,
thrust deep in the mind
oppress and bind –
eager to find
escape from dread,
ideas fed
by rumour and
teasing spread,
for no-one’s thought strong enough,
powerful and tough enough
clever or kind enough
to trust not to muff
of bluff;
and so –
repetitive, vain
ritual refrain
again, again …

who has all authority,
to shoulder anxiety,
and his word is his bond.
