"I'm sorry, Miss", said the plumber to Jennifer, replacing the cover of the water tank of her upstairs toilet, "But it seems to be working fine".
"Working?", said Jennifer, "But it can't be. It hasn't worked properly since I moved into this old place and yesterday all this wierd slime started coming up out of it".
"Well its flushing fine now", he said, pressing down the toilet handle and flushing the toilet to demonstrate, "Perhaps whatever was blocking it has been cleared. Like that slime you mentioned".
Jennifer looked annoyed.
"Well what about the weird sound in the pipes", she said.
"Weird?", asked the plumber.
"Yes this weird ghostly sound", said Jennifer, "Like wooo-oooh! Like moaning or singing. The pipes were making that noise all yesterday. It was driving me mad".
"Its probably just air in the pipes", said the plumber, "Its nothing to worry about. Just turn on all the taps in the house and flush all the toilets; that usually sorts it out".
"I see", said Jennifer, "So you're not actually going to fix anything".
The plumber could see from the young womans face that she looked worried.
"Look", he said, fishing a business card out of a pocket of his overalls and holding it out to her, "Because I haven't fixed anything I won't charge you, not even a call out charge. Just give it a few days and if your still having problems, phone me again and I'll have a proper look at your plumbing but I think whatever problem you've been having has cleared up by itself".
"Fine", said Jennifer, snatching hold of the card but staring off into space with a look of annoyance as the plumber quickly packed up his tools and then headed downstairs to let himself out.
But then, suddenly, she felt an overwhelming need to pee and so, closing the toilet door, she lifted up her skirt and pulled down her panties before sitting down on the toilet.
She hated having to call out plumbers and repairmen. It wasn't just the idea of having a strange man enter her house but they always seemed so sleazy; smirking at her and talking to her like she was dumb and she always had the feeling that, if they weren't sex predators then they were cowboys planning to rip her off.
She looked at the patterns on the woodgrain in the toilet door wishing that she'd brought a magazine in with her to read and noticed that the strange wavy brown and white streaks in the woodgrain looked like faces; strange, creepy faces like figures in an Edvard Munch painting and they all seemed to be smiling at her.
"Come on, Jennifer", she said feeling a little spooked by it and remembering how, as a child she had been afraid to go to the toilet on her own at night; had wet her bed rather than go to the toilet.
She picked up a bottle of toilet cleaner that was sitting near her feet and read the ingedients on the label on the back just for something to read:
"hydrochloric acid", it said, "chlorine bleach, sodium lauryl, sulphate, citric acid, blood".
"What?", she thought, startled, "Blood? Why would they put blood in a toilet cleaner?".
"Working?", said Jennifer, "But it can't be. It hasn't worked properly since I moved into this old place and yesterday all this wierd slime started coming up out of it".

"hydrochloric acid", it said, "chlorine bleach, sodium lauryl, sulphate, citric acid, blood".
"What?", she thought, startled, "Blood? Why would they put blood in a toilet cleaner?".
But then she started to hear that weird noise again coming from the pipes, like a person moaning.
"Oh no", she said with a heavy sigh, "Not that. Anything but that please".
But there was something different about it she thought. What was it?
She held her breath and listened to the sound and then, suddenly, she heard,
"Jen-ni-fer".
"Oh fuck!", she thought, "Did I really hear that? Did that noise coming from the pipes really just say my name?".
She thought about getting up off the toilet and leaving, just running out of the toilet without even bothering to pull up her panties
But it couldn't have been, she thought.
"Come on, get a grip, Jenny", she said to herself, "Pipes do not talk to people".
But then she heard something else. It sounded like footsteps walking down the hallway towards the toilet.
Leaning forwards, she held the toliet door shut and locked it.
"Who could that be outside?", she thought, "The plumber? Maybe he hadn't really left? Maybe he wasn't even a real plumber?".
But then, through the small gap at the bottom of the door, she saw the shoes of who ever was outside and then they started pulling at the door, twisting the handle, trying to open it.
Instinctively, she started to urinate into the toilet, hearing the sound of piss against porcelain
And as if the person outside had also heard the sound they started to pull harder on door and then they started to bang on the door.
But then suddenly, the banging stopped and, looking at the crack under the door she couldn't see the shoes anymore.
The lightbulb above her started to flicker.
"Oh no", she thought, feeling her heart break as she looked at the light, "How can that light bulb go off. I only changed it a couple of days ago. This isn't fair".
Then she heard that voice again, coming from the pipes.
"Jen-ni-fer", it said and this time it was louder; clearer so that she couldn't pretend she'd imagined it.
"Please", she said, "Why are you doing this".
She felt something brush against the inside of her thigh and her body went numb then, suddenly, it felt as if something had grabbed hold of the string of her tampon and was pulling it out.
She stood up like a shot, whirling round to face the toilet and saw her tampon floating in the toilet bowl and something else. What was that?
Warilly, she leaned forwards to look at something beneath the floating tampon, something lying; lurking like a blue crustacean at the bottom of the bowl. It looked like?
A corpse hand shot up from the bowl grabbing hold of her dangling cross shaped pendant and pulling her neck and head down towards the toilet.
She screamed, struggling to undo the catch at the back of the chain and in her head she saw what had happened there years ago; a person murdered, cut up and pieces of their body flushed down the toilet; the pieces never found but the soul left to haunt that wretched toilet.
Looking down at the toilet bowl she saw blood come bubbling up out of it and then the light went off and whoever had been lurking outside the door earlier opened it and came in.
"Jen-ni-fer", she heard them say.
And then she screamed.
"Oh no", she said with a heavy sigh, "Not that. Anything but that please".
