Nike

Sun through the window
creates boxes of light
on the crinkled white bed cover.
She rolls over, hand outstretched
to find her phone,
check the time and
creep from beneath;
back unfurls, spine like
keys on a typewriter.
Marlboro light lit,
smoke catching rays
of yellow that pour
through; a misty haze,
deep shadows.
She dons a pair
of Airs, bubbles on
the side. The tick that
means victory, but
as she rises to her
feet and spreads
her wings, she
finds herself flightless.
Her father was the giant
who was felled, now
Nike with a wing clipped
falls back down.
Cigarette burning a hole
in the pillow.
