through marriages

a girl and a boy are brought

under an nuptial knot

to be a husband and a wife

partners in life.

As per sect and religion,

country, community and region,

custom, caste and creed

the procedures varied.

I cite my case

a youth from a rural base

had never seen the bride

till she came out of her hide

by a gust of wind

when her veils were thinned.

in a ritual function

a part of the celebration

after a lapse of three days

today’s youth, the tale may amaze.

In a palanquin carried over shoulders

with sound of drums and bursting of crackers

I was taken to the bride’s place

the ladies there filled of the space

to see this creature as a groom

an embarrassment then still in me zoom.
