Dusty cocoon of box

tight packed through warmer days

deep green wire limbed larvi

unbends into branches

 

of frizzy plastic tree

tall, when you both were new

but only one has grown -

now the star's in your reach

 

while I unwind the lights

I'd carefully wound up

“No tangles!” (An omen?

Or practice pays, perhaps)

 

you through dark patches, pull

shimmering tinsel's soft

tickling sussurous, then

we're on the baubles

 

mix sleek shop-bought like eyes

on a jewel butterfly

with priceless dog-eared crafts

brought home each year from school.

 

The longest night's a mine -

gold in the seams of time

these memories we forge

into wings for the Sun

Seasons greetings Di,

I loved the unique way you describe the opening of the tree and the festive hanging of tinsel, lights and decorations. Such perfect use of the metaphor.

I loved the idea of 'priceless dog-eared crafts brought home each year from school' It made  me think of ancient crafts donated to grandparents that they feared to ever dispose of. But there often seems a story behind many Christmas tree ornaments of differing ages. We got our Toddler group to decorating a tree for the village 'Tree festival'.

Have been wondering how you were, tried to send an email through ABC, but it may have gone into your 'Spam'. Rhiannon

Thankyou Rhiannon :0) I think little children must put some of the magic they feel at Christmas into the crafts they make at the end of term. Angels cut out of cereal packets and bells made from egg boxes have something hopeful and innocent which makes the easy perfection of bought stuff seem the real rubbish. And if kept and brought out at Christmas every year, might remind them of how it felt to be a little child as they grow up and excitement diminishes and parents, too. I love all the fragile things my son brought home :0)

I hope very much you have a beautiful Christmas with all your family, I imagine you filling the house with yummy smells the table covered with wonderful food you've cooked, music, and everyone enjoying their lovingly chosen presents :0)

Thank you, Di. I hope  you have a happy Christmas. Actually we're off to stay with a son and daughter-in-law who loves baking and cooking! So, I'm spoilt! Rhiannon

This poem really encapsulates the dressing of a tree, and the reflections it brings. I don't understand people who choose a new colour theme each year then chuck it all out afterwards. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas Di, and a very Happy New Year xxx
