To Be a Child Again

When did we lose the joy in insignificance?
Things so microscopic
Were once mind blowing
An expansion of our inner universe and wider perception
Same birthdays
Same names
What are the chances?
Shapes and colours
Animals and numbers
Learning
So much learning
Joy in the mundane
Joy in the everyday
Our minds and imaginations forming rainbow bridges to our reality
Blowing dandelions
“Make a wish!”
Buttercups under chins
“Do you like butter?”
Playing Kerby, Bulldog and Stuck in the Mud
Handstands
Trampolines
Rain-soaked with skinned and bloody knees
A favourite toy
A constant companion
Now a ratty and glazed eyed dragon
Best friends forever are now acquaintances
Belonging to distant and cobwebbed memories
A time long since passed
Grains of sand trickling down the hourglass
Our minds are no longer amazed
The expansion halted
Our perception now jaded and stilted
Childish games
Have evolved into games of the heart
Gambling with souls and emotions
No concern for consequence
The dandelions all stalk, no fluff
The buttercups brown and wilted
Handstands and trampolines, impossible
Be it bad knees, bad lungs, bad backs
Hiding from the rain with umbrellas and thin rain macs
Our bodies now more fragile, more susceptible
There’s no joy in the mundane
No joy in the everyday
The rainbow bridge has long since disintegrated
And the colour drained away
No longer learning
No longer growing
No imagination
Only bleak and harsh reality
All the while yearning
Yearning to be a child again

Great poem which I can relate
Great poem which I can relate to, but I still constantly enjoy life, even at 70, be it at a steady pace, and get pleasure from writinng, as I didn't have the time when I was younger. But I do get the message of your poem, and I'm sure it resonates with many.
Jenny.
