My cherry blossom baby

When I first looked into 
those dark blue eyes,
that gazed up at me in wonder
and love undisguised. 
I saw my friend, someone 
I had known from 
my own conception.
A soul mate that I had 
waited for 27 years.
 
She was pink cheeked -
face shaped like a flower bud
with cream skin the velvety softness
of dewy morning petals.
Watching her grow 
and blossom like the glorious
young spring cherry, was
a privilege beyond comparison.
Slender and graceful,
a sapling bending and twisting;
branches sprouting 
as new passions form.
 
Kind and quirky, I've kept her close
and nurtured her strengths 
with love, guided, 
supported her stem straight. 
Guarded her with the red
passion of a lioness.
Limber limbs, soft and supple
as the pale green young tree,
so fresh is she, innocent -
her ideas still forming
but something in her eyes,
those deep dark pools, says
that there is a guiding strength 
within - a gold as old as time.
 
My soul mate blooms,
my cherry blossom baby,
a baby no more - young lady.
Handed over to strangers
to guide and to strengthen, 
for pruning and pleaching.
But will strangers see 
the pure delicate beauty?
And will they really appreciate 
my little flower of unfettered Liberty?

Much said here, Ae...between the lines, and in the lines themselves, of course.

'Kind and quirky'...effective aliteration...also 'pleaching and pruning'...'pleaching' or indeed 'plashing', not a word one often hears these days.

Your descriptions intrigue me, as does the way you weave your poetry from seemingly simple beginnings to form a complex tapestry.

Thanks Tina - I am glad you found the poem interesting. I just handed over my little daughter to school from being home educated. Handing her over to strangers to bend and twist and conform her to their will is a big deal for me as I have always had such a big part of her education. More than anything though - she is a unique character and you worry that people will not appreciate her quirks like I do.

I hadn't thought about the likness to ourselves that helps the concern and understanding that we have with our children.

I expect that a lot of what you have taught has been to guide her to think about what others say and not let herself be just pushed into their opinions. And you still have that sort of input in out of school hours, to build on what you've given her. And to encourage to remember God's Words too. Rhiannon

such beauty with the image of nurturing, resembling the cultivation of the cherry-blossom. The picture so perfect for this poem. Loved it a lot.

My wife and I have two grown children,but I well remember their birth, your poem beautifully exemplifies how I felt when I first them, such love and hope, their newness and purity nearly overwhelming.  Love your red passion of a lioness line, in fact all your wording is compelling and picturesque lovely powerful poem.

It's the only time I get feisty like a lioness - when my children (or my mum) are threatened in some way. The rest of the time I'm very mild mannered. 

Im glad the poem touched a cord and you were able to identify with my sentiments.
