The Siren and The Faery

There once was a faery
Handsome as could be
And every day he’d fly to the sea
To visit pretty mermaids
He’d taunt and tease
Something about them made him quite pleased
Could it be the fact
They had no power over him
Or did he torture them
Simply on a whim
Whatever the case,
They mostly didn’t mind
Except one girl
Who decided he was quite out of line
Every day he’d come to play
Sad, sweet, sick, twisted games
Perhaps not knowing
Not everyone was having fun
Needing him as they needed the sun
Confused and heartbroken
She went on her own
And spoke to her seashells
Seeking a home
Somewhere to feel peacefully pleased
Away from that damned,
Prettyboy faery
Try as she might
She couldn’t escape it
He’d smile and laugh
But was always complacent
Nobody noticed
How sad the scene was
And all of a sudden
Her mind was abuzz
She considered her motives
If her heart was true
Decided it didn’t matter
And went ahead through
She did what she could to help everybody
Even those that were horribly haughty
She solved people’s problems
One by one
And soon she was left
Burning up in the sun
So the mermaid sank to the bottom of the ocean
Wishing she had a magic love potion
To take her away to a far better land
Where pain and beauty
Didn’t go hand in hand
Everyday she saw him
And his pearly white smile
She longed for and hated
That time for a while
She waited and waited for things to change
But Finally decided,
Love was too out of range
She gave up at last
Her hope ran out like a sigh
She laid on the sea floor
Waiting to die
Nowhere to be
Nobody to see
But a taunting, beautiful, conceited faery
To live or to die
She swam up each night
To see him dip his toes in the lake
She waited and stared
Utterly unprepared
For the loneliness that crept in her heart
“Doesn’t have to be him” she called out
“Anybody will do, I swear
I’m just so sick and tired
Of being admired
I’m Unloved, uncared for. I’m aware”
To whom she was addressing
She couldn’t be sure
But she knew her cry had been heard
Because out of the blue
She felt something new:
A love slipped through the air
She was stunned into silence
Not thinking a thing
She waited so patiently
To learn what had happened
On that desperate day
When she’d cried all emotion away
She didn’t wait long
For the sea began changing
The water around her then surged
It pulled her to land
Not feeling so grand
She saw him right next to her
Alarmed and distraught
She waited a lot
For her heart to start screaming in pain
But everything was fine
His beauty out of mind
And not a thing was wrong
“How strange,” she thought
for she could finally think
about what had just taken place
“I’m not in pain. In fact, I’m okay,”
she slipped into sleep with relief
But even more,
When she awoke
He was still sitting right there
Not daring to hope,
She looked for the bloke
That held his attention so clearly
They were alone
and for a moment he’d shone
a bit of confused uncertainty
“why is she smiling?
Is it so surprising?
I told her I’d be here last night”
But of course she’d forgotten
Her memory rotten
She grasped the situation at hand
“Things are okay for right now,”
He seemed to say in his stance,
“You can go back to sleep
Or get something to eat
Don’t worry, I’ve nowhere to go.”
So she went about her business.
Luring pretty men to their death
And sure enough when she returned at day’s end,
The faery boy was scribbling with pens.
“Ahem” she muttered, clearing her throat
so as not to seem too rude
He looked up and smiled
Kept drawing a while
Then decided it was time to go
She didn’t know when he’d be back
Certain he would when he could
She went off to bed
And cradled her head
Which seemed oddly lighter that night
Free of concern or a lover to yearn
Things were okay until light
