He had always observed things for longer than the average person. He takes care to notice the minute details of a subject, whilst taking into account the bigger picture.
Yet I know him well enough to be certain that, being who he is, it is the minutiae of life that affect his thoughts and feelings the most. The smallest of strange looks, odd gestures or word omissions are often the details that he finds herself recounting to me or simply re-examining in his own mind.
A turning of the head; a late reply to a question or an inconsistent tone of voice frequently lead to him questioning his actions - he never blames another human for their behaviour.
Instead, he tries to discern the cause of a person's re-action by working backwards to study the flaws in his own actions. Has he said something that could be perceived as mildly offensive? Has he not asked a direct enough question? Has he accidentally made an inhospitable gesture? Does he not inspire people to answer him? Has he made his counterpart uneasy?
The mind boggles at the various million indicators he receives; how has he recognised this one mannerism from so many as being out of place?
A few small actions can influence our whole lives. Here the newlyweds: their smiles just that bit unsteady. There a mother: she stares after her child with remorse.
Significant or inconsequential?
All he knows is that the mind is one incredible microscope.
