Stamped on heart

I totter to the post office
And put my heart in a large brown envelope.
Ignoring it's pleas to stay.
Not listening to its excuses
for the pain.
Too soon to hear them.
I posted my heart international
swathed in bubble wrap
to protect from further bruising.
And tape around it twice.
Randomly choose a country,
An address that's make believe
I kiss its plumped up package
wish it bon voyage
And lick the stamps
Fiddly to stick them on the irregular creases of paper.
I know it will get back to me
I know it might take time
But a heart that true won't stay where it's sent
It knows that is has to be mine.
But for now
I rather like
The empty space
In my chest
Just the right size for a jar of jam.
