What I didn't want to say to you
is that to me, love was like when all the 5,000 pieces of you scatter
and land like paving slabs.

What I didnt want to say to you, is that to me
it was like getting hit by a truck when all you wanted
to do, was change the song on the tape deck.

What I didnt want to say to you
is that everything that ever happens from now on
will have a soundtrack with favourite hits playing for weeks.

What I didn't want to say is that you are like tequila shots with an important meeting in the morning,
and like a lime in a bag of freezer peas
this stands out as acceptance.

I wanted to say that love had been a crowbar,
a theatre light, a taxi rank,
a matter of metaphor.

But what I said was duvets,
shoes that fell apart at zebra crossings
and everything that was on my answerphone
