Starched collar, tie, dull bruise
below, a love bite he can’t place.
Cigarette to still him, Wayfarers.
Stepping into the wet rush hour,
dreams of poppies, grass, good
English loam. A box to lie in, roomy:
Regent Poplar; Pine; Bronze Emperor.
He hasn’t enjoyed a rest in days.
At Bishopsgate, a Romanian Big Issue
vendor, piping to each passer-by
Morning! signs at him, a grey
figure, as if taking measurements.
