Monday 13 October
I sat next to Nettie when I got the bus that morning. As I sat down, I whispered: "Nettie Scoot. Dirfen. Nefrid nerfid."
"Huh, what did you say, Lenny?" Nettie asked.
I thought. "Nothing. I was just saying that I hope Michelle's not at school today." I waited.
She sighed. "So do I. She's so mean."
It wasn't clear enough if the spell had worked. I had to think of something else.
"Nettie, who's your favourite friend?"
She looked horrified for a minute. "That's unfair. I like you and the twins equally."
Yes! The spell worked.
Knowing Nettie would have no memory of her trance, I decided not to bother telling her. I thought for a minute whether to tell her about Michelle and Mrs Nella. I thought best not to I thought of a brilliant idea instead.
"Nettie, when we get to school, can you pretend to be friendly with Michelle, and sit with her in class?"
Confused, she asked: "Why?"
I grinned. "I thought it's about time we played a joke on Michelle. Don't say anything, just sit with her."
I thought best not to say anything about Michelle and Mrs Nella. There was more of a chance Nettie would play along better if she didn't know.
Our first lesson was Maths. I joined the twins, and Nettie sat with Michelle at the back. I noticed that Abbie sat on her own, and kept frowning over at her friends, Chris and Tina, who were both sat with Michelle. That meant Abbie was the one de-friended.
Wendy tugged on my shirt. "I thought you said you were going to do the spell on the bus!"
"I did," I whispered. "It worked. I told her to pretend to be friends with Michelle. That way, she can tell us what Michelle says. A spy on the inside."
"That's great!" Wendy beamed. "Abbie's been de-friended. Even If Michelle picks someone else to 'befriend', she'll still need another one."
Oh, I just looked at the time - 11:00. Bedtime. I'll write tomorrow what Nettie said on today's journey home .
Goodnight,
Lenny
