Just a Rope and a Chair!
Just a rope and a chair
Took the life
That once was there
Just a rope and a chair
Took that life
From the people that care
Just a rope and a chair
Laid his mother’s
Grief bare
Just a rope and a chair
Was what brought
A sister to tears
Just a rope and a chair
Made his sister
Remember the years
Just a rope and a chair
Put an end
To his fears
Just a rope and a chair
Caused the death
That should never have been
Just a rope and a chair
Brought us
To this scene
Just a rope and a chair
Took us to the Crem
Where we cried
For all of them
May his troubled soul rest in God's peace
And may God give comfort to those that loved him
A friend’s brother (1975 -2012)

This is very moving, and so neatly constructed which adds to its clarity, and poignancy, Moya. Rhiannon

There's no rhyme or reason

There's no rhyme or reason to grief nor how it's expressed Moya. Sometimes our own old griefs come back to us when we see the grief of others we care about. And an unexpected death of such a young person will take a lot of understanding. You can just keep on as you are, being there for your friend.

Waow, Moya, what a write. So

Waow, Moya, what a write. So powerful and tragic - you handle a difficult and sensitive issue so very well. The repeated line 'Just a rope and a chair' bores into the readers mind as you culminate a number of images and emotions. This repetition of a single, simple line becomes unsettling and almost disturbing, which works magnificently to this poem, making it all the more powerful. I was left feeling grief-stricken myself. I often think that a poem can grant the reader a chance to empathise where they may not be able to otherwise.
I'm very sorry to hear of your friend's brother. My heart goes out to you and all others affected.
All the very best.
Steve
