August 23rd. The Woods. Strung across
all paths, intricate, unseen webs split space
into gossamer satellite dishes
till afternoon sun's gold caress flashes
warning where a burl of cream-striped spider
plumbs between grass-tip and twig, makes wider
its glittering attention span, in wait
for the buzz of a fly to detonate
suspended animation. Quick, precise
as human hands, disembodied, with eyes
soulless seeming - is this why we fear them
for that's what Progress leads us to become?

Gossamer satellite dishes - yes, that's exactly what they're like!
I hope you'll add a picture to this one?

Your walks are real
Your walks are real adventures that filter into your poems.
"gossamer satellite dishes.."
Some lovely expressions, as always.
Enjoyed. Paul

You bring the glittering
You bring the glittering scenes of the webs in the hedges and woods this time of year to life in my eyes! Such lovely scenes. Another use for the WWW, wood-wide webs!
I don't fear spiders, though since the stories of some dangerous ones coming in occasionally with the banana imports etc, I've been a bit more hesitant of picking up the big ones!
I think I dislike scuttling anonymous insects more, difficult to catch if they come indoors. But spiders are usually easy to catch by hand or mug, and they do eat flies up! Rhiannon

The woods are going to be
The woods are going to be full of these webs, especially now the mating season is due. Your poem reminded me of a walk we took yesterday in Stanton woods near where we live. Thank goodness we don't have any poisonous spiders.
Clever poem indeed.

Hello Di,
Hello Di,
I don't think the webs have anything to do with mating, but I know that during September they're more daring and pronounce, coming out of hiding and feeling more confident. Mind you with the weather being so up and down, I'm sure they're as confused as us as to what the weather will do next.
We don't seem to have had many daddy long legs as last year, also the many insects in the garden haven't had that much nectar, with no rain and plants dying.
I did like the way you described the webs like satelite dishes, that's such a unique way to look at them. Our garden shed most other years has been full of webs, but this year even the webs haven't appeared, which in a way is good for the butterflies, as they were always getting trapped in them.
We do have a lot of tiny flying spiders, that seem to have made their home in my washing line, I always have to clean the line off before I can hang any washing. It's like they're having a free for all party during the night...she says smiling.
I'm no expert on spiders, so best read up what the professionals have to say.
Jenny.

Excellent
Favourite line among many: "webs split space into gossamer satellite dishes"
Very different if you were walking through an Austalian forest...
You always provide an excellent read, Di_Hard. Thank you.
