Late-night Visit
When Ninny heard the knock she thought it was Petrach back from the
helicopter repair shop and that he had forgotten his keys. She went to
open the door.
It wasn't Petrach. It was Spoonitsy Chan.
"Spoonitsy," said Ninny, "how good to see you."
"I was just passing," said Spoonitsy with a wave of both of her fat
hands.
"Well, you must come in," said Ninny. Ninny was a little in awe of
Spoonitsy and didn't like to question how she could have happened to be
passing their out-of-the-way house on the top of the old hotel.
Spoonitsy marched straight past Ninny and sat down in the best
armchair.
"I won't beat about the bush," said Spoonitsy. "I'm pregnant."
"Oh how wonderful," said Ninny.
"And I just wondered if your baby was still shrinking."
It had long been agreed that Spoonitsy's firstborn would marry Petrach
and Ninny's firstborn. Ninny had never been keen on the idea and now
she saw a way of getting out of the agreement.
"Oh yes," said Ninny, "he's getting smaller by the day. By the time
he's of marrying age I should imagine he'll just be a speck."
Ninny didn't believe this would really happen but neither did she
think that Spoonitsy would want her firstborn child to marry a
speck.
"I see," said Spoonitsy. "So he's going to be quite a freak, isn't
he?"
Ninny didn't know what to say as a wicked smile played across
Spoonitsy's lips. What new plan was this?
