I am a reconciler and I am at a party in my honour. It began for the
supervisor of work who is getting married, but then I arrived and there
were real cheers of celebration.
I am suddenly huge and expansive and I light matches and place them all
around the building. I could crush whole streets underfoot, flick cars
into neighbouring towns.
I put full matchboxes, the size of small buildings, all around the
block. I put matches on top of the boxes and set light to them. They
burn for a while before fizzling out, not even anything so dramatic as
a fizzle.
I douse the matchboxes with paraffin and then drop more lit matches.
This time there is a conflagration, rising high, catching the walls of
the buildings, and I have to shield my eyes with my arm which prickles
against the heat. The buildings look like Westminster, but I know it is
the club where the party is taking place, and also a neighbouring
apartment block.
The flames grow.
Inside the apartment building, a doorman stands alone in the blaze.
People enter the foyer, despite the flames all around, despite the
searing heat, and the he advises them that there is a fire.
They are disgruntled by this information and head back into the
street.
I am with a friend, and I tell him that my work here is done; that I
must move on.
Emphatic as ever, he persuades me to meet him tomorrow, one last time,
although I see no point in hanging around.
We go our separate ways.
