We are at the gateway

- an anagram of getaway,

we have passports:

so we exist.

 

We stand in front

of men with

buzz-cut hair

and the belly of a warlord

after fifty years

down from the mountains

and soft living in Kabul

on American dollars.

 

Is it the money

which makes them fat?

We wonder, and we wonder

at our own skinny frames.

 

We answer the questions

for which we have practiced

the right words.

 

There was a catholic priest once,

he talked about the catechism

before he died.

 

We know this country,

we have seen it on pirate DVDs;

it has no other solutions

but lawyers, guns and money.

 

We remove our clothes,

the women are in another room;

we bend over.

 

They find nothing,

they did not expect to,

‘Have a nice day’, they say.

 

Our mantra echoes

“Chicago is possible”

and we know that anything is.

Yes, you need ID and a body search to try and find safety.  You just need a few dollars and a winning smile to end or completely fuck up other people's lives.  

Not taking the moral high ground, we're just as cynical about sacrificing our young to commerce and being contemptuous of those seeking shelter.  Just grateful that, however much of a basket case, our country still generally thinks guns are a bad thing.  

'They found nothing, they did not expect to'.  Telling indictment of a worldwide system that humiliates the vulnerable just because it can.

guns are a bad thng, it's like somethign out of the simpsons. instead of guns we need more guns. Imagine if our Prime Minister said after a kniving that everybody should carry knives. We need more knives to be safer. Anyway, got away from the point.
