A tiny square of printed circuit holds

measurements and calibrations.

DNA and iris scan, digitised fingerprints

proclaim identity.

I was born in Benghazi, but my skin is white,

When you measure everything,

you lose all sense of scale.

 

A passport blue or purple-covered gives

entitlement and preservation,

PNG or weeks in jail, battery-fried interviews

can be avoidable.

is all good, the picture, the name of the poem and the content but as above, was the whale symbolic of 'the bigger picture'

Yes, that's right. I remember a political cartoon, (can't remember who, sorry!) It was around the time they found UBL. There was a row-boat with two uniformed soldiers facing away from a whale. One had a telescope to his eye, and the whale had Osama Bin Laden written on the side.
