Looking

We look down,
like stars,
like gods,
like planets
named for gods,
with goddesses
for satellites.
We look down,
who looks up?
They look up,
the fools,
the faithful,
like fish,
stargazey-
pie-eyed drunk
with religion.
Who looks around?
Backward?
Forward?
Away?

I don't know why, but this
I don't know why, but this conjours for me the "Eyeballs in the Sky", from the Perishers cartoon strip.

looking back
Why would one want look around, is it in a strange place, or dazed, in confusion? What do you have against looking up? Funny it sounds like "lock up". Getting locked up for looking up.
Lot was warned they were not to look back on escaping, and when they were fleeing his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. And Jesus said, no man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. Sounds best to look in front of you, say like you are driving a motorcar or steering a boat.
“Two men look through the same bars, one sees the mud, the other the stars.”
I find the story cynical and not constructive, although admittedly is a very well written poem.
