FOREVER SHOOTING THE BREEZE

You’ve blunted all instruments
tarnished some steel,
rebounded the echoes
and launched an appeal
Dulled all the senses
extinguished some light,
unsheathed a sword
and fought the good fight
You’ve listened to prejudice
tripped off a tongue,
pricked up the ears
and silenced some guns
Walked on the water
dispelled a doubt,
raised up the glass
and been in with a shout
You’ve made the bed
feathered a nest,
counted all chickens
and journeyed out West
Worn out all welcome
given up ghosts,
sang from a roof top
and answered Last Post
You’ve waltzed with Matilda
chased some lost cause,
been dragged through the hedges
and begged on all fours
Searched out a needle
defended the poor,
painted the town red
and broken the law
You’ve no rhyme or reason
wished all souls well,
spent the new penny
and populated a cell
Kissed a face quickly
laughed the last laugh,
turned both the cheeks
and fattened a calf
You’ve diverted all attention
fingered some keys,
tickled those ivories
and held back the years
Ran through a river
danced to a tune,
basked in the sunshine
and howled at the moon.
