The Gloom - A Ramble



Sometimes the drapes 

are drawn tight.

other times

I spread them wide

to shed some light

on the gloom.



I'd rather be

singing, or

having a laugh,

but the gloom

doesn't care

what I want



it just wants 

to be a cruel

reminder 

of what's missing

in our life.



i've heard all 

the things

i was told I would

hear. 

'at least he no

longer suffers.'

'there's a

reason for everything.'

'he's in a better place.'



what better place?

the place he came from

was pretty damn good.

created, from what I understand,

by the same creator of the 

better place.

what sort of fickle

bullshit is this?



i believe in only

two things lately.

there is a god.

there is no god.

i change my beliefs

daily.



we do our best 

to get some joy 

out of life.

her joy is with

paint brushes.

my joy is putting

words on paper.



it gives us the 

ability to fight off

the gloom,

to crush it under

our feet and

move on.



when it returns

we're somewhat 

prepared.

we've gotten used

to the ugly bastard

and will continue

to crush it every

chance we get.

Wasn't it Winston Churchill who called it the black dog on his shoulder again?

What kind of painting does she do? When the painting or writing is appreciated or helps someone else, that gives a bit more pleasure doesn't it? feel like giving you both a hug, and just that encouragement to press on, and maybe talk to the God you feel cross with. Rhiannon

Hi, and thanks for the kind words. Lately my wife has been painting furniture. Chairs mostly. But she's also done work on canvas. We've been doing fine, but we do have our moments. Like today, sitting at my desk at work. So I got in a quick write to make me feel better. It helps.

Very true, celtic. That's why I write. I sometimes don't know what I think until I write it down. lol. If that makes any sense.

I hate some of those things people say - guess they want to just show they care, but don't they ever stop to think. Keep crushing that gloom, Rich, and while you do, keep painting and writing respectively. This is such a beautifully expressed piece of writing.

Thanks, Deborah. I'm always unsure about posting this sort of thing. But, then again, I fugure if someone else can relate to it, then maybe it's not such a bad thing.

Rich, every word of this I can identify with...even the painting, and I bet your dear wife is a darned sight better at it than me.  Whatever it takes, we tell ourselves...him and me, and no matter what they say, it don't get no easier; no way.

Thanks, Tina. It don't get no easier is right. You're numb the first few months, but when the numbness starts wearing off you're faced with the reality of the thing and that's when you come to the realizaton that your life will never be the same. It changes you. It really does. And talking about it is better than not talking about it.

Thanks, insert. I had written the first verse a couple of weeks ago, intending to write a piece for the poetry monthly, but when I started work on it yeserday it took on a life of its own. And thanks for encouraging me to write about it. It very different from the sort of stuff I'm used to writing.

You are like an antidote to gloom.  It takes something special to write words so full of light when you are flooded by dark, I hope I learn from you.

Thank you, PS. It's an awful nice of you to say, and I'm glad you think so. It is a difficult time, but we make a concerted effort not to make it any more difficult than it has to be. Like crawling into a bottle, avoidng people, being bitter etc. Those three things are easy pits to fall into. We both decided early on to get through it with as much grace and dignity as we could muster. We'll never get over it, but we will get through it. Thank you again.

Rich, keep posting everything you feel. It helps. Both you and others. I have absolutely no religous beliefs. Until I need them! We'll have that beer when you come across the pond. Dinner is on me. Love to you and Darcey. Her painting looks amazing by the way. Loved the desk.

Ah, thank you so much, Joe. I will take you up on that dinner. I Hope it's sooner than later. Darcey craves steak and I'm more the grilled salmon or swordfish sort. Hate to mention this, but lately my wife has been drinking blueberry beer. She has bottles of it in the refrigerator. It must be popular now, they even have it on tap at the local pub. Excuse me, but, Bleeeeech! lol. So glad you're liking the artwork. She's finally getting serious about starting a small business and selling the stuff. In the past it was always just given away as gifts. I've convinced her she could make money doing this. So she'll give it a go. Cheers to you good buddy. I can almost taste the Guinness.

What a beautiful piece. I have the God thoughts, it's hard to believe in anything, the word 'faith' often seems absurd. Feel so glad you're writing. And that the furniture keeps coming.

PS This is for poetry monthly isn't it - I feel the theme may have been a starting point?

Thank you, Vera dear. the 'God thoughts' have been on my mind a lot lately. Might have to write a song to the old guy. I have a few bones to pick. I love writing, especially when the sub-conscious takes over and you're helpless to do anything about it. It's usulally the most honest sort of writing. At least I've always found it to be so. I did actually start writing this for the poetry monthly theme of windows, but another force took over and carried me in another direction. I had this notion in my head about a window pane holding memoiries. And about cutting out the window pane and storing it away because some of the memories are too painful. But if you think the above piece somehow fits into the theme I'll make it a poetry monthly entry.

It does fit, dear friend. The window frame metaphor is wonderful but perhaps your pain is too big to write it yet.  I like this one anyway. Keep telling myself 'If The Moon can write, you can, useless Vera Clark Fart amoebic plankton.''  Then I eat Haribo Starmix and don't write. I send you a fried egg and a love heart.
