One foot in front of the other...

Some people step out onto the path.
They put one foot out in front of the other without ever thinking about it.
And in no time at all they’ve made great progress.
They’re doing well.
They’re feeling good.
They’re looking on top of things.
And the people around them are telling them;
“Well done!”
“We’re so proud of you.”
“You’re doing so well.”
They give it no thought at all.
And in no time they’re all the way along the path.
But some of us have studied the path.
We’ve seen what it’s made of.
We’ve seen the moss and the cracks.
And we’ve seen just how the flagstones are wonky.
How they don’t quite fit together right.
We’ve seen the obstacles and the jams.
Well ahead of time.
But in time at all its clear we’re making no progress.
We’ve tried to think about things before putting one foot out in front of the other.
We’ve tried to be smart about it.
But we trip and stumble.
Not over obstacles.
But over our own feet.
And we’re stuck.
Not in a jam up ahead.
But in a paralysis of our own making.
Meanwhile they just keep on going.
And they give it no thought.
And they’re doing so well
And everyone is just so happy for them.
Should I have paid less attention?

An interesting comment on the
An interesting comment on the need to press on (but not thoughtlessly, or careless of others' needs) together with the need to take care, but not with paralysing fear or regrets. I think that is why I have to pray constantly, and am very aware of how I can charge on, but without usefulness, and may upset others, or not do anything for fear of making a mess of it!
In the Bible the verses 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowldege him, and he wiill make your paths staright' (Proverbs 3: 4,5) encourage me that with God's help I can walk on, and be helped up when I trip or make mistakes.
I like the picture! Rhiannon
