Time Piece of You
Jennifer Pickup 09.05.2023
Inside a drawer I find a piece of you,
Something I own that once belonged to you,
Tucked away and kept safely out of sight,
My search for something else brought it to light.
I clasp your watch around my skinny wrist,
It makes me cry yet I cannot resist,
I watch the second hand tick like a crime,
They say that grief gets easier with time...
All those that tell that lie have never lost,
They do not understand the mourning cost,
Sometimes it is a gently ebbing sea,
But then the tidal wave envelopes me.
I placed it on my wrist to keep it safe,
Last summer when the doctors still gave faith,
And at the time I did not mean to thieve,
That I would give it back I did believe.
I am not missing who you were last year,
When the shade of death started to appear,
My loss resides in happy memory,
Shared time slips through my hands like mercury.
One day I’ll get that golden watch resized,
So I can wear it on my arm with pride,
Today I place it back inside the drawer,
As I cannot remember any more.

I know this feeling and you
I know this feeling and you've captured perfectly the symbolism of a time peice so precious and personal to its wearer and also to the new custodian.

I can completely understand
I can completely understand how you're feeling in this poem. I wear my late dad's wrist watch, it brings me closer to him and keeps such good time, like keeping a part of him alive, and recalling the good times.
My heart goes out to you. Take care.
Jenny.

I said it before & I'll say again....
You're really good at this...
Totally relate.......
I lost my father Inlaw a while ago, my wife is crushed. He left me his prized Binoculars & compass...... As much as I want to express in a poem or paragraph what I feel in an ode or psalm, about the small mementos he left me... I cant... not even close... but you did here; with clarity & grace, depth, flow, meaning & love.....
Its a gift.....
Soothing to the soul it is.....
Thx Jen
